Bluestone Cleaning and Sealing

We service Sydney, Newcastle, Central Coast, Port Stephens and the greater Hunter regions.

Bluestone has been quite commonly used for buildings, kerb and gutter, ballast, cobblestone and paving and can come either honed (matte), polished, tumbled, sand-blasted or bush-hammered.
Sealing bluestone is highly recommended prior to installation. A lot of bluestone contains soluble salts and can often become permanently discoloured via the installation process. It is always best to consult with your stone supplier to verify whether your bluestone requires pre-sealing. If the stone does not require to be pre-sealed, it is generally recommended to apply a coat of sealer on the surface prior to grouting. This is to act as a grout release and assist in the grout clean-up process.
Sealing your bluestone creates a barrier that provides protection against stains by chemicals, contamination and deterioration.

If you have a salt water pool with bluestone surrounds it is imperative that you seal with an impregnating sealer with hardening properties that will help solidify the particles in the stone and stop any chance of salt spalling and disintegration of your stone.

If you are wondering if it may be time to re-seal then you can easily test how porous your bluestone is by placing about 15-20mls or a tablespoon of water on the treated surface and leave for 20 minutes. Then soak up the water with some paper towel or a tissue, pressing hard to soak up any water in the pores of the surface. If the water has absorbed into or leaves a dark mark on the surface, it requires more sealing.
