Limestone Cleaning and Sealing

We service Sydney, Newcastle, Central Coast, Port Stephens and the greater Hunter regions.

Limestone is similar to marble in that it is sensitive to acids and household cleaners. It has been commonly used in architecture, sculptures, facades, floor tiles, outdoor paving and pool surrounds.
Limestone also comes in a honed (matte) or polished finish.

Honed finish is very scratch resistant because it lacks the glossy surface of a polished limestone. Therefore, when honed limestone does get scratched, it is not obviously reflected when light hits it. Consequently, honed limestone soaks up liquids spilled during cooking faster and easier.

Polished finish acts as a “coat” for the limestone, therefore allowing it to withstand stains better. However, the reflective characteristic of the finish makes it more prone to scratches.

Sealing your limestone creates a barrier that provides protection against stains by chemicals, contamination and deterioration.

If you are wondering if it may be time to re-seal then you can easily test how porous your limestone is by placing about 15-20mls or a tablespoon of water on the treated surface and leave for 20 minutes.

Then soak up the water with some paper towel or a tissue, pressing hard to soak up any water in the pores of the surface. If the water has absorbed into or leaves a dark mark on the surface, it requires more sealing.
