Slate Cleaning and Sealing

We service Sydney, Newcastle, Central Coast, Port Stephens and the greater Hunter regions.

Slate tiles are often used for interior and exterior flooring, stairs, walkways, wall cladding and even roof tiles.

The ways of cleaning slate can vary depending on the type of slate tile being cleaned.
Alkaline based cleaning agents are generally safe for cleaning slate but acidic based cleaning agents could potentially damage the slate tile surface.

Due to slates cleft planes and tendency of spalling, slate should never be cleaned at very high pressures, and if so only when the grout and stone is solid. Slate is quite dense, but still very porous.
Sealing your slate creates a barrier that provides protection against stains by chemicals, contamination and deterioration.

If you are wondering if it may be time to re-seal then you can easily test how porous your slate is by placing about 15-20mls or a tablespoon of water on the treated surface and leave for 20 minutes.

Then soak up the water with some paper towel or a tissue, pressing hard to soak up any water in the pores of the surface. If the water has absorbed into or leaves a dark mark on the surface, it requires more sealing.
